QUINCY, Ill. -- The Saginaw Valley State University men's basketball team completed the Hansen-Spear Funeral Home Classic at Quincy on Sunday with an 82-70 defeat at the hands of the host. The Cardinals (4-5) fell behind early to the Hawks (6-5) and couldn't recover before the end of regulation.
Maurice Anderson matched his career high of 21 points to lead SVSU in scoring for the game. Anderson also recorded two rebounds and two steals. Freddie McIntosh registered 18 points on 5-for-9 shooting that included four three-point jumpers. Richmond Mawutor grabbed 10 rebounds while Elijah Mattingly hauled in seven.
Quincy jumped out to a quick 5-0 start before building a 12-3 lead in the opening 4:03 of play.
The Hawks' lead grew to 18 points (30-12) at the 7:49 mark of the first half, the largest lead of the game.
A 9-2 run consisting of three shots made by McIntosh from beyond the arc cut the advantage to 52-43 with 11:12 left in regulation.
Quincy responded with an 11-2 run that pushed the gap back to 18 points (63-45) with just over eight minutes remaining and the Cardinals couldn't close the gap before time expired.
