DETROIT – The Saginaw Valley State University men's basketball team suffered a 79-58 loss at Wayne State on Saturday afternoon inside the Wayne State fieldhouse. The Cardinals (9-6, 2-4 GLIAC) drop in the conference standings with a 2-4 record in league play.
Freddie McIntosh led SVSU in scoring with 17 points. McIntosh also pulled down two rebounds and tallied an assist. Tre Garrett added 15 points and four rebounds in the losing effort. Toodles Seal added 12 points and was just one rebound short of a double-double. Dylan West was the last Cardinal player to score double-digit points with 10 after 5-7 shooting from the floor. He added 10 rebounds to earn a double-double on the afternoon. Kevonne Taylor contributed defensively with three blocks and also on the glass with four rebounds.
SVSU built the first lead of the game with a 6-2 start in the opening two minutes of play. The Warriors knotted things up at eight points before swiping a one-point lead with an and-one on the game-tying layup. Wayne State used a 6-0 run to grow the lead to 20-12 with just under 10 minutes to play in the first half. In the final two minutes of the opening 20-minute period the Warriors hit a jumper for an 11-point advantage, the first of the game. The Cardinals rallied with eight-straight points to cut the deficit to 31-28 as the teams entered the locker room at the break.
McIntosh made a jump shot in the opening minutes of the second half to keep the margin close before WSU pulled away to a 43-33 score with 15:07 on the clock. An 8-0 run pushed the lead to 16 and the Warriors led the rest of the way through regulation.
The Cardinals remain on the road with a makeup game against Davenport on Monday, January 22. Tip-off in Grand Rapids, Michigan will begin at 6:00 p.m., EST.
