Cardinals Lose Close Battle at GVSU

ALLENDALE, MICH. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's basketball team fell 88-83 at Grand Valley State on Thursday night. The Cardinals (9-5, 2-3 GLIAC) held a six-point halftime lead, but the Lakers (6-8, 3-1 GLIAC) scored 54 points in the final 20 minutes of play to pull off the comeback victory.

Freddie McIntosh had a great game for SVSU as he scored 30 points on 12-21 shooting from the floor. It is the second time in his career that he has scored 30 or more points, both times occurred this season. McIntosh is just 23 points shy of 1,000 career points after the team-leading performance against GVSU.

Toodles Seal scored 20 points and pulled down five boards in the losing effort. Tre Garrett was another Cardinal with double-digit points with 13. He added four rebounds, three steals, and two assists to his totals. Kevonne Taylor had a team-leading nine rebounds while Ethan Hill had seven boards. Both Taylor and Hill tallied five points.

SVSU used a 13-0 run during the opening 10 minutes of play to build an early 25-11 lead. McIntosh sparked the run with a jumper. Seal scored seven of the 13 points during the almost four-minute run. The Lakers battled back with five-straight points to end the first half with a 40-34 deficit as the teams headed into the locker room at the break.

A 6-0 run in the second cut the Cardinal lead to a single point, 53-52, with 13:36 remaining in regulation. A jump shot two plays later knotted the score at 54. The Lakers used a 7-0 run in the middle portion of the period to capture the lead, 63-57 and would hold it until Dylan West made a jumper that flipped the advantage toward SVSU (70-69) with 6:28 left to play. The lead would flip three more times until the Lakers earned the final edge 74-73. A 7-2 lead proved to be the difference for the Lakers as the Cardinals ran out of time to complete the comeback.

The SVSU men's basketball team returns to action on Sunday, January 14 at 3:00 p.m. with a matchup against Davenport. The game was originally scheduled for Saturday but was rescheduled due to inclement weather hitting all of central Michigan this weekend.
