Cardinals Cruise to Win Over Kuyper

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's basketball team cruised to a 122-58 victory over Kuyper College inside O'Neill Arena on Tuesday night. The Cardinals (1-2) earned their first win of the season with the victory and were five points shy of tying the program record for points in a single game.

Tre Garrett and Toodles Seal led the team in scoring with 29 points. That total was Seal's career-high with SVSU. It is also the second time he has scored over 20 points in a single game. Garrett's 29 points were one shy of equaling his career-high that was set during his freshman season.

Ethan Hill had a great performance off the bench with 16 points on 6-10 shooting from the floor. He was 2-4 from three and at the line while also contributing seven rebounds. Freddie McIntosh recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. He was two assists short of a triple-double. Alijah Harrison scored nine points. Cadin Augustine pulled down seven rebounds and added a bucket to his stat line. Kevonne Taylor finished with five points, five rebounds, and three blocks.

The Cardinals scored 38 points off turnovers, 54 points in the paint, and 27 on fast breaks. The team registered a season-high 24 assists and hauled in 59 rebounds.

Seal hit the game's opening shot with a jumper from beyond the arc that sparked a 9-0 run that spanned the first three minutes of play. The lead continued to grow throughout the remainder of the first half with the largest margin coming with 4:20 left on the clock when the score sat at 50-22.

Saginaw Valley State led 58-31 at the break. Seal totaled 16 points in the first 20 minutes of play, while Garrett added 15 to the cause. The Cardinals' bench outscored the Cougars 20-5 while holding the lead for 19:24.

The second half was much the same, as SVSU built a 68-point advantage with 1:41 left in regulation. McIntosh came alive in the final 20 minutes as he tallied 13 points, seven rebounds, and five assists in the period. Garrett added another 14 points and Seal scored 13.

The Cardinals face a tough test this Thursday, November 16 as the team makes the trip to Indianapolis to face the fifth-ranked Greyhounds. The non-conference showdown is set to tip at 7:00 p.m.
