UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's basketball team hosted Gannon University for a nonconference matchup Saturday at the James E. O'Neill Jr. Arena.
The Cardinals pulled away in the second half and earned the 78-65 win to move to 2-2 overall to start the season.
How it Happened:
- Gannon jumped out to a 13-7 lead in the opening five minutes, but the Cardinals used a 10-2 run to move in front by two six minutes later.
- The Cardinals stretched the lead to 11 alter in the first half.
- Gannon chipped away and trailed by just three points at the break.
- SVSU scored the first seven points of the season half capped off by a Jiovanni Miles dunk to pull in front by 10 points.
- Tre Garrett stretched the advantage to 60-45 with 11 minutes to play with a layup.
- Gannon cut the SVSU lead to seven in the closing minutes, but the Cardinals closed out the win at the line.
Inside the Box Score:
- Tre Garrett had a career-high 26 points, including 14 made free throws. He added 12 rebounds for a double-double.
- Freddie McIntosh added 22 points, while Miles finished with 14 points, including three 3-pointers.
- The Cardinals shot 22-of-51 from the field, 3-of-17 from deep, and 31-of-41 from the line.
- SVSU finished with 12 assists and 12 turnovers while getting narrowly outrebounded 37-36.
- Demetrius Mims led Gannon with 20 points and 12 rebounds.
