Huskies Defeat Cardinal Men in GLIAC Quarterfinal Matchup

HOUGHTON -- The Saginaw Valley State University Men's Basketball team traveled to play at Michigan Tech on Tuesday (Mar. 3) night in the 2020 GLIAC Tournament Quarterfinals. The Huskies came out ahead in the end, posting a 75-56 victory over the Cardinals to advance to the Semifinal round.

Michigan Tech will face Grand Valley State, which will host the semifinals after Ferris State lost to Northern Michigan. Saginaw Valley's season is now over after the team posted a 16-13 overall record.

SVSU led by four points at 26-22 with 5:17 to play in the 1st half but the Huskies worked their way back and carried an eight point lead into halftime with the scoreboard reading 36-28. 

Myles Belyeu scored a team-high 13 first half points and Malik Ellison added seven rebounds. 

In the second half, the Huskies outscored the Cards 39-28 and were able to claim the 75-56 win. Ellison had 14 second half points while Darnell Hoskins Jr. had nine.

Inside the Boxscore

  • Ellison and Belyeu each finished with 16 points, with Ellison collecting the double-double with his 10 rebounds. Belyeu added six boards.
  • Hoskins netted 11 points as well for Saginaw Valley. 
  • Delano Smith added eight points, four boards and four steals.

Saginaw Valley graduates two seniors from the 2019-20 team, as Fred John Jr. and Lachlan Anthony have finished their careers for the Cardinals.
