Cardinals end Ashland's eight-game win streak with 71-57 victory

UNIVERSITY CENTER -- Saginaw Valley State University played host to the hottest team in the GLIAC on Thursday (Feb. 20) night, which was the Ashland Eagles, who had won eight straight games coming into the day. The Cardinals came to play and had a solid effort throughout, posting a 71-57 victory over the Eagles at O'Neill Arena.

The win moves SVSU to 15-11 overall and 9-9 in league play. Ashland is now 16-10 overall and an even 9-9 in the GLIAC as well. They are part of a four-way tie with teams at 9-9 in the league with Northwood and Lake Superior State. 

The Cardinals held the Eagles to a 28.1 shooting percentage in the first half and, despite only shooting 38.2% from the floor themselves, carried a 31-28 lead into the half.

Myles Belyeu had eight points through the opening 20 minutes while Malik Ellison and Darnell Hoskins Jr. each had seven points. 

SVSU used another strong half in the second, hitting on 51.7% of its shots to score 40 points and hold the visitors to 29. That put the final score at 71-57.

Inside the Boxscore

  • Belyeu had a game-high 26 points with a team-best seven rebounds, two steals, an assist and block.
  • Ellison added 23 points with five rebounds, five assists and a steal. He was named the Meijer "Player of the Game."
  • Hoskins finished with seven points, three rebounds, three assists and a trio of steals. He is just nine points shy of 1,000 for his Cardinal career.
  • Jarno Pomstra netted six points and six boards for the home team.
