Men's Basketball falls on the road at #18 GVSU, 86-74

ALLENDALE -- The Cardinal Men continued on the road on Thursday (Feb. 13) night, facing the 18th-ranked Grand Valley State Lakers in a league contest. Despite holding a late first half lead, the Cardinals fell to the Lakers by a final score of 86-74.

SVSU held a first half lead until there was 13:08 showing on the clock when GVSU claimed an 11-10 edge. The Cardinals would fight back, however, building a game-high lead for them at 30-21 after James Toohey drilled a three-pointer. Grand Valley ended the opening half on a 13-0 run, carrying a 39-32 lead into the break.

Myles Belyeu had 10 points and six rebounds through the first half of action while Toohey had 11 points in the opening 20 minutes. 

The home Lakers worked their lead to double digits with 10:08 left at 62-50 and led by as much as 19 points with 5:12 left to play with the score showing 76-57. Grand Valley would maintain a double-digit cushion from there, eventually claiming a 12 point win at 86-74. 

Inside the Boxscore

  • Belyeu finished with game-highs of 27 points and 11 rebounds. He added two assists and earned Meijer "Player of the Game" honors. He sits just 23 points shy of 1,000 for his young career.
  • Toohey finished with 14 points, hitting on four shots from three-point range. He added five boards with a rebound, assist and a steal.
  • Malik Ellison added 16 points, four assists, two boards and a steal for the Cardinals. 
  • Delano Smith added eight points and five rebounds.
