Cardinals fall to Lakers despite career-high from Belyeu

SAULT STE. MARIE -- The SVSU Men's Basketball team had another road league contest on Saturday (Feb. 8), facing the Lake Superior State University Lakers. Lake Superior State would come out ahead in the game by a final score of 82-66. Saginaw Valley was paced by Myles Belyeu, who matched his career-high with 33 points in the game. 

The Cardinals led by as many as seven points in the first half, holding a 24-17 edge when James Toohey drilled a three-pointer with 6:52 showing on the clock. Lake Superior State would work its way back eventually and carry a 38-36 lead into the halftime break. 

The Lakers posted a 44-30 scoring advantage in the second half, working their way up to a lead of as much as 21 points with 5:36 left in the game and the score 75-54. The final score would end up being 82-66 after the teams traded made buckets within the final 25 seconds of play. 

Inside the Boxscore

  • Belyeu earned Meijer "Player of the Game" honors after matching his career-high with 33 points. He added a team-high five rebounds.
  • Delano Smith and Toohey each added nine points, with Smith adding four boards and two assists and Toohey matching the team-best five boards.
  • Malik Ellison had seven points while matching the team-high five rebounds and adding a team-best five assists.
