Cardinals Add Proven Coach to Staff in Joshua Schumacher

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – Saginaw Valley State University football head coach Ryan Brady announced the addition of Joshua Schumacher to the Cardinal coaching staff. Schumacher will fill the Associate Head Coach / Special Teams Coordinator / Linebackers Coach role.

"Josh is a great leader, coach, and mentor. I couldn't be more excited about him joining our staff and program here at Saginaw Valley State," said Coach Brady.

Schumacher comes to SVSU after eight seasons as the head coach at NAIA Concordia Ann Arbor. While with CUAA, Schumacher compiled a 59-25 record, taking the CUAA Cardinals to five NAIA playoff appearances. Concordia Ann Arbor won back-to-back Mid-States Football Association (MSFA) Championships in 2020 and 2021 under Schumacher. He was also named the MSFA Mid-East Coach of the Year twice (2017 and 2020) and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Regional Coach of the Year during his team's two championship seasons.

"He has 16 years of experience coaching linebackers and has been a successful head coach for the past eight seasons at Concordia. Josh is passionate about developing student-athletes and building cohesive, high-performing teams," continued Brady.

During the eight seasons as head coach of CUAA, Schumacher recruited and developed 14 NAIA All-Americans, six Academic All-Americans, four Conference Players of the Year, and 121 all-conference student-athletes.

"Josh's strong reputation and relationships with the high school coaches in the state will greatly impact our recruiting efforts in Michigan and beyond. Josh is a skilled teacher, problem solver, and strategic planner. Josh is committed to helping create a championship program and life-changing student-athlete experience. SVSU Football is in good hands with Coach Schu!" stated coach Brady.

Before moving into the head coach position at Concordia Ann Arbor, Schumacher served as the defensive coordinator for the CUAA Cardinals for the first four seasons of the program. He also served five years as the defensive coordinator of Faith Lutheran High School in Las Vegas, Nevada from 2008 until 2012.

"Coach Brady has given my family and me a tremendous opportunity, and we are excited and grateful to be part of the SVSU community," said Schumacher. "There are a lot of great people here, and my goal is to support, coach, lead, and serve in a way that helps this team reach new heights both on and off the field."
