Whiteside named GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University football team earned a big nonconference road win at Texas A&M-Commerce on Saturday in Commerce, Texas.

With the offense unable to get going for SVSU, the Cardinals were lifted by the play of its defense. The game's big play came on a 74-yard interception return for a touchdown by junior defensive back Nick Whiteside.

For his efforts, Whiteside has been named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Football Defensive Player of the Week.

In the win over the Lions, Whiteside added seven total tackles and one pass breakup. This season, he has 22 total tackles, two interceptions, and four pass breakups.

The Cardinals return to GLIAC play this season, hosting rival Northwood University in the Axe Bowl on Homecoming. Kickoff is set for 2 pm on Saturday at Wickes Stadium.
