Baseball Loses Series Finale to Davenport

CALEDONIA, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University baseball program fell in the finale of a four-game series at Davenport on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals (24-16, 7-9 GLIAC) were swept by the Panthers (29-11, 15-1 GLIAC) with a 9-4 loss in game four.

SVSU got multi-hit performances from Ethan Scheib and Ryan McCartan. Scheib led the team with two RBIs, while McCartan tallied the Cardinals' only extra-base hit with a double. Brady Baalaer (L, 0-2) started on the mound, pitching three innings and allowing five runs — four earned — on five hits and a walk, while striking out one. Nathan Masar pitched the next three innings, giving up two runs — one earned — on three hits and a walk, and striking out five. Jake Shelagowski finished the game, tossing the final two innings and allowing two runs on four hits and a walk, while recording four strikeouts.

Davenport got on the board in the first inning with a fielding error that allowed a runner to score from third. SVSU tied it in the top of the second on a sacrifice fly by Aaron Bess, scoring Buck Snabes. However, in the bottom half of the inning, the Panthers regained the lead for good, scoring three runs on two run-scoring singles and a sacrifice fly to make it 4-1.

Scheib cut into the deficit in the fourth with a sacrifice fly that scored Bess, but the Cardinals did not score again until the ninth inning. Davenport added a run in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings, and tacked on two more in the eighth to push the lead to 9-2. Scheib picked up his second RBI of the game with a single that scored Zane Wilson in the top of the ninth. McCartan later scored on a Ryan Jarvis fielder's choice to bring the final score to 9-4.

Up Next: Saginaw Valley baseball will play its final non-conference game of the season on Tuesday, April 22. The Cardinals will host the Northwood Timberwolves in the fifth Dow Diamond Classic. SVSU is 4-0 at Dow Diamond against NU, with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 PM from the home of the Great Lakes Loons in Midland, Michigan.
