Ryan Jarvis and Lucas Mead both walked in the first inning and came around to score on back-to-back RBI singles. Buck Snabes delivered the first, followed by Lewis to give SVSU an early 2-0 lead.

Grand Valley responded with an RBI groundout in the third to cut the deficit in half, then tied the game in the fifth on an RBI single. Another RBI groundout in the sixth gave the Lakers a 3-2 lead, ending Baalaer's outing.

Jake Shelagowski took over and pitched the final 2.2 innings, allowing five runs on five hits and one walk while striking out four. GVSU added a run in the seventh before breaking the game open with a four-run eighth inning, highlighted by a two-run double.
