ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team opened a four-game road series against No. 23 Grand Valley State with a hard-fought loss on Friday afternoon. The Cardinals (18-8, 3-2 GLIAC) were edged by the Lakers (21-8, 5-4 GLIAC) in walk-off fashion, falling 8-7.
Ryan Jarvis, Lucas Mead, and Buck Snabes each recorded two hits in the contest, with Jarvis driving in a team-high three runs and drawing a walk. Ethan Scheib reached base three times with a single and two walks, scoring twice along with Brady Carpenter.
On the mound, Chase Raymond started for SVSU, tossing seven innings and allowing seven runs on 10 hits while striking out one. Nathan Masar (L, 1-2) entered in relief in the eighth, giving up one run on two hits and striking out one.
Grand Valley opened the scoring in the second inning with an RBI fielder's choice. The Lakers broke things open in the fourth, plating five runs on a two-run homer, an RBI double, an RBI groundout, and a run scored on a wild pitch.
SVSU responded with two runs in the fifth, as Scheib and Carpenter scored on a Jarvis single to right center, cutting the deficit to 6-2. The Cardinals continued to chip away and erupted for four more runs in the seventh. Austin Cicerone doubled home Scheib and Carpenter, then scored alongside Jarvis on an Aaron Bess single, tying the game at 6-6.
The Lakers quickly regained the lead in the bottom half of the seventh with a solo home run, but SVSU answered again in the eighth. Jarvis lifted a sacrifice fly to score Brendan Conkle and level the score at 7-7.
