HILLSDALE, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University baseball program traveled to Hillsdale Wednesday afternoon. The Cardinals (11-5) defeated the Chargers (6-9) with Connor Cornwell's two-run home run lifting them to a 3-2 victory.
Cornwell went 2-for-3 on the day with two runs and two RBI. Austin Cicerone had a multi-hit day going 2-for-5 at the plate. Lucas Mead was on base four times without recording a hit going 0-for-1 with two walks and two hit-by-pitches. Chase Raymond (W, 4-2) got the start pitching six innings. He allowed two runs on six his and three walks while striking out three. Three separate relievers all pitched a scoreless inning with Ryan Adams striking out one, Jack Decker allowing one hit, and Jake Shelagowski (Sv, 4) closed out the game punching out two of the three batters he faced.
After two quiet innings, Hillsdale got on the board first with an RBI single to center to take the 1-0 lead. The Chargers doubled their advantage in the bottom of the fourth with a walk, a ground out, and a single to put runners at the corners. A fielder's choice scored another to make it 2-0.
In the next half inning, SVSU got one of the runs back as Cornwell was hit by a pitch to lead off. After advancing on a wild pitch and two strikeouts, Ryan Jarvis reached on an error by the second baseman that allowed Cornwell to touch home. In the next frame, Buck Snabes led off with a single. He stole second and was moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Ethan Scheib before Cornwell dug into the box. He delivered the biggest blow of the game with his second home run of the year to take the 3-2 lead for Saginaw Valley.
Both Adams and Decker allowed one runner on base, a walk and a double respectively, and both of them stranded that runner at second. Shelagowski set the Chargers down in order in the ninth to earn his fourth save of the season.
