Baseball Falls in Both Games of Doubleheader Against Maryville

ST. LOUIS – The Saginaw Valley State University baseball program wrapped up their four-game series against Maryville Monday afternoon, dropping both games of the doubleheader to split the series two each. The Cardinals (3-3) fell with scores of 4-3 and 13-2 against the Saints (2-2) with the latter ending via run rule.

Ryan Jarvis had another two RBI game in game one as he co-leads the team in RBI with Austin Cicerone with five. Lucas Mead had a multi-hit day with a double in game one and two singles in game two. SVSU pitching struck out 14 over 14 innings with Brady Baalaer striking out all six in the first contest through his five innings of scoreless work.

Game One: SVSU 3, MU 4

Saginaw Valley and Maryville went scoreless for three innings until Aaron Bess delivered the first blow in the top of the fourth. An RBI single drove in Lucas Mead to give SVSU the 1-0 lead. They extended the lead with a two-run double by Jarvis in the fifth but confusion on the basepaths ensued and Jarvis was thrown out between second and third and Brady Carpenter tagged out at home to end the inning.

After running themselves out of an inning, the Cardinals found they needed the possible insurance. In the bottom of the sixth, Daniel Wilcome (L, 0-1) took over for Baalaer. After retiring the first batter, the next two got on with a hit-by-pitch and a double. A two-RBI single scored both making it 3-2 before an error on a pick off scored the tying run from first. After the Saints tied the game, a single and a triple gave them a 4-3 lead.

The Cardinals got a pair of runners on with walks in the seventh but couldn't push them across to tie the game.

Game Two: SVSU 2, MU 13

The long ball bit Saginaw Valley in the second game. Starter Ben Kochany (L, 0-1) had two of the first four batters reach before an RBI single and a two-run double gave the Saints a 3-0 lead. Two walks followed to load the bases and a grand slam pushed the game out of reach in the first. Maryville scored two more in the second to make it 9-0 before the Cardinals cracked the scoreboard. A strikeout wild pitch allowed Cicerone to reach and Jarvis to score to make it 9-1.

Will Juday took over in the bottom of the fourth after Kochany went three innings allowing nine runs, eight earned, on five hits and four walks. Juday pitched 2.1 innings and gave up four runs on four hits and three walks. A solo home run in the fourth followed by two RBI doubles in the fifth and a run-scoring wild pitch in the sixth made it 13-1 Saints.

Jacob Bardwell and Steve Getts both pitch 0.1 innings in the sixth in relief and Ethan Rose drove home Ethan Scheib in the seventh on a sacrifice fly to bring the game to its final score of 13-2.
