Baseball Sweeps Maryville in Doubleheader

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Saginaw Valley State University baseball program traveled to St. Louis, Missouri for a doubleheader against Maryville. The Cardinals (3-1) swept both games against the Saints (0-2) with final scores of 6-2 and 2-1.

Jack Decker (W, 2-0) earned the win in game one pitching six innings allowing one run on three hits while striking out 10. JJ Arbini (W 1-0) pitched six innings in game two allowing one unearned run on two hits and struck out four. Ryan Adams (Sv, 1) earned the save in game two retiring all three batters he faced.

Buck Snabes led offensively going 3-for-8 over both games. Aaron Bess and Jordan Lewis both had two hits and two RBI in game one while Bess scored two runs as well, one on his two-run home run in the ninth. Ryan Jarvis's two-run single in the second inning of game two provided the only scoring needed in the win.

Game One: SVSU 6, MU 2

Maryville took the lead in the first with an RBI single and held onto the lead until the fourth. Connor Cornwell drove in Bess with a sacrifice fly to tie it 1-1. Lewis singled up the middle to score Ethan Ross later in the inning to take a one-run lead. Both runs came off the Saints starter Ben Gregory (L, 0-1) who gave up six hits over five innings.

Lewis scored Ethan Scheib on another run-scoring single in the sixth to double the advantage. The Cardinals extended their lead in the ninth when Austin Cicerone drove home Brady Carpenter with a sacrifice fly to make it 4-1. Three batters later was when Bess hit his first home run of the year to right center to make it 6-1.

Nathan Masar pitched the seventh allowing one walk and Jake Shelagowski took over in the eighth allowing one run on two hits and three walks while striking out three.

Game Two: SVSU 2, MU 1

Saginaw Valley took the lead first in the second game with Jarvis's single up the middle that scored Lewis and Ryan McCartan. It was the only runs SVSU needed with Arbini on the mound. He allowed one unearned run in the sixth to make it 2-1 before Adams took over in the seventh.

Jarvis and Cicerone both had multi-hit games in game two going 2-for-4. Lucas Mead, Snabes, McCartan, and Lewis all had one hit each to total eight hits for the team and 18 through both games. Cardinal pitching allowed seven hits and eight walks over 16 innings pitched, as they allowed less than one runner on base throughout both games.
