SVSU Baseball Posts Shutout in Season Opener

XENIA, Ohio – Saginaw Valley State University baseball went on the road to start the 2023 season as they played Cedarville University at Athletes in Action Sports Complex. The Cardinals came away with a demanding 8-0 victory. SVSU had the bats going accumulating 10 hits and walked seven times. All nine of the starters were able to get on base.

It started early for the Cardinals getting a run in the top of the first off a Martin Money RBI single taking the 1-0 lead. In the third, Tucker Roe singled home a run scoring Connor McClennen and doubling the lead. Moving to the top of the fifth, SVSU had their first multi-run inning. It started with a fielding error and a hit putting two men on and Colin Cornwell drove one in with a fielder's choice. Two batters later, Reed Raymond had himself an RBI single and the lead was 4-0.

SVSU pitching had a wonderful performance. Starting pitcher Tyler McLaren threw six scoreless innings. He struck out seven while allowing three hits and did not walk a batter. After his outing, Nolan Raymond had a perfect one inning with a strikeout and Hunter Merillat came in to close the door. Merillat pitched two scoreless innings striking out three and walking one.

The Cardinals had a big seventh inning as they doubled their lead with four runs. A walk and an error set up Money for another RBI single. He finished 3-for-4 with two RBI. The bases were then loaded up and Brandon Scheurer walked one home to make it 6-0. Jeffrey Reseigh was the next batter and kept the line moving with an RBI single to left field. McClennen rounded out the scoring with a fielder's choice that allowed Austin Schweiger to trot home and reach the final score of 8-0.

Roe finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and Reseigh was 2-for-5 with an RBI as well. Cardinal pitching struck out 11 and walked one with three hits allowed in the shutout victory.

SVSU baseball starts the year off 1-0 and wraps up the weekend with a double header Saturday against Cedarville. The games are set for a 12:00 pm and 3:30 pm first pitch.
