Pride sweep Cardinals on Senior Day

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team continued its final home series of the season against Purdue University Northwest with a Senior Day doubleheader Sunday at the SVSU Baseball Complex.

The Cardinals fell in both games, as the SVSU offense was unable to get going. PNW took game one 2-1 in 11 innings and earned the sweep with a 5-0 win in the finale. The losses drop SVSU to 15-12 overall and 10-8 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Prior to the start of game one, the Cardinals honored eight student-athletes. The class of 2021 includes Kyle Henigan, Mitch Morley, Austin Koin, Jon Quinlan, and Nolan Hamilton. SVSU also recognized Brandon Wise, Gerrit Eding, and Matthew Malgi from the class of 2020.

SVSU was unable to get going against PNW starting pitcher Chad Patrick in game one, as he allowed one run on six hits, and struck out 11 Cardinals in seven innings. Colin Cornwell finished with two hits for the Cardinals, while Hayden Jatczak picked up SVSU's lone RBI on a single in the fourth.

The Cardinals were held in the game throughout with excellent pitching. Kendall Anthes got the start and went eight innings, allowing one run on four hits, walking one, and striking out five. Hunter Merillat (4-1) was charged with the loss, allowing one unearned run on two hits in 2.1 innings of relief.

PNW took control of game two early, scoring the only five runs of the game in the first three innings. SVSU was held to four hits, all singles.

Nolan Knauf (2-2) was charged with the loss, allowing five runs, four earned, on five hits, walking two, and striking out four in three innings.

SVSU plays its final home game of the season with the finale against PNW at 1:05 pm Monday at the SVSU Baseball Complex.
