SVSU Baseball takes second game 7-3 in split at Purdue Northwest

HAMMOND, Ind. -- The SVSU Baseball team hit the road and played at Purdue Northwest in GLIAC action for the weekend. In Friday action, the Cardinals played in a game that was halted Thursday in the 5th inning and played another nine-inning game afterwards. SVSU dropped the first by a 6-2 score before bouncing back for a nice 7-3 victory in the second contest.  

Game 1

The Cardinals grabbed a 1-0 in the top of the 2nd, scoring their run when Anthony Kania had a sacrifice fly to score Adam Turner, who reached earlier on a walk. 

Purdue Northwest tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the inning but the Cardinals took a 2-1 edge in the top of the 4th after a double steal where Collin Winters scored. 

The Pride held SVSU scoreless from there, however, adding two runs in the 4th and 5th and another in the 8th to secure the 6-2 win. 

Joshua Riggs and Jordan Swiss had the lone hits for the Cards, with Swiss's being a double. Austin Koin reached twice on walks as well, adding a stolen base along with Winters.

Amani Godfrey (2-5) took the loss on the mound, working 4.2 innings. He allowed three runs (1 ER) on three hits, striking out five and walking another five batters. 

Game 2

The second game began with SVSU going for three runs in the opening inning to take a 3-0 edge. Swiss scored on a passed ball, Derrek Clyde crossed the plate on an error and Craig Wilson scored on an RBI groundout from Riggs. 

Another run came in the second to move the lead to 4-0 when Swiss had an RBI single to right field that pushed Gerrit Eding across for the run. 

After the Pride made the score 4-1 with a run in the 4th, the Cards responded with a run in the 5th to make it 5-1. Clyde had an RBI single that scored Swiss for the run.

A pair of PNW runs in the 7th trimmed the deficit to 5-3 as the teams headed to the 8th frame. 

Clyde added another RBI when he scored Logan Russo on a squeeze in the 8th and a Riggs RBI triple in the 9th scored Ian Janssen for the 7th run to make the score 7-3. 

Swiss, who entered the game in the 7th with the score 5-3, finished the game for his third save of the season. He allowed no runs and no hits and struck-out four batters in his 2.1 innings. 

Brandon Wise (4-3) picked up the victory after tossing 6.2 innings in the start. He allowed three runs on five hits, striking-out four and walking four. 

Clyde finished with three hits, two RBI and a run scored. Swiss had two hits with a double, RBI two runs and a pair of walks. Riggs had two RBI with at triple while Andrew Burke had a hit and reached twice on walks.  

Up Next...

The teams will return to action on Saturday with a doubleheader. The first game will feature a first pitch at 1:00 p.m. eastern time. Both games will be seven-inning contests.
