UNIVERSITY CENTER -- The SVSU Baseball team finished its weekend series versus Grand Valley State on Monday, posting a game one victory by a 9-5 score before coming back in the second game and tying it 5-5 before it was called due to darkness.
The Cards improve to 12-9-1 overall and 6-1-1 in the GLIAC while the Lakers are now 8-14-1 and 1-6-1 in league contests.
Game 1
After GVSU went for two runs in the 1st, SVSU scored six in the bottom to take a 6-2 lead. Craig Wilson had an RBI double, Austin Koin a two-RBI single and Andrew Burke cleared the loaded bases later with a three-RBI double.
Two more runs came the home team's way in the 2nd after Wilson and Koin had RBI again, pushing the Saginaw Valley lead out to 8-2.
Each team scored in the 5th, with SV's coming when Collin Winters walked with the bases loaded, making the score 9-3. GVSU added two in the top of the 7th, but that was all and the Cardinals claimed the 9-5 victory.
Koin was 2-3 with a double, two runs and three RBI with a walk. Burke had the double and three RBI. Wilson went 2-2 with a run, walk and two RBI. Winters finished 1-2 with two walks, an RBI and two runs scored.
Kyle Henigan (3-1) got the win on the mound, working 5.0 innings. He allowed three runs on five hits with four strikeouts and five walks.
Game 2
After the Cardinals took a 1-0 edge in the home half of the 1st on a Jordan Swiss RBI double that scored Derrek Clyde, GV went for a pair of runs in the 3rd and 5th innings, respectively, taking a 4-1 lead.
SVSU got another run in the bottom of the 7th when Joshua Riggs put a ball in play that was booted by the third baseman, leading to Burke scoring on the error and trimming the deficit to 4-2.
In the top of the 8th, GV got a solo home run and made the lead three runs at 5-2.
As darkness crept in, the Cardinals had one last at-bat to get back into the game in the home half of the 8th.
They would do just that, using a hit and two walks to load the bases before Burke had a sac fly to plate Adam Turner to make the count 5-3. Clyde would later reach on a throwing error by shortstop that pulled the first baseman off the bag and allowed Koin to score, making it 5-4. The next play saw Winters add a sac fly, pushing across pinch runner Thomas Loftus to tie the game at 5-5.
After the 8th ended, the game was called and deemed with the 5-5 score.
Clyde had two hits in four trips with a run and RBI. Swiss had an RBI and a double. Burke added an RBI on a sac fly while Turner and Kania each added a hit.
Camden Dice got the start, allowing four runs (3 ER) on six hits with two walks and a pair of strikeouts. Chase Gearing worked 3.1 innings of relief, allowing a single run with three walks and two strikeouts.
