Baseball caps weekend with 8-1 win at #15 Mercyhurst

ERIE, Pa. -- The Cardinal Baseball team finished the weekend with a big 8-1 victory over the No. 15 team in the country in the Mercyhurst Lakers. The win came in the second game of the weekend, after Friday's halted game was deemed as final in the fifth inning with the Lakers leading 7-0.

In Sunday's contest, Mercyhurst got on the board in the bottom of the 1st with their only run to take a 1-0 edge.

It wasn't until the 5th frame where the Cardinals got on the board, scoring two runs after Andrew Burke plated Gerrit Eding and Collin Winters had an RBI groundout that scored Anthony Kania

That 2-1 lead held true until four more runs came SVSU's way to push the lead to 6-1. Winters led-off the inning with a solo home run and Adam Turner ripped a two-RBI single that pushed Craig Wilson and Joshua Riggs across. Jordan Swiss scored as well on a squeeze play via Craig Wilson

Riggs finished the game's scoring with two RBI on a single, scoring Winters and Burke to put the game at it's 8-1 final score.

Brandon Wise notched a career-high 11 strikeouts while moving to 2-0 on the year. He allowed two hits, one run and walked one batter in his 7.0 innings of work. Kyle Henigan and Swiss combined to work the final two scoreless innings, with Henigan striking-out one batter and Swiss a pair.

Riggs was 2-4 with two RBI, a run and a walk. Winters had the home run as well, scored twice and had two RBI. Turner had a hit and two RBI while Burke had a hit, run RBI and walk. Winters stole two bases and Wilson added one for SVSU.

Friday's game saw Mercyhurst's Matthew Minnick allow zero hits and post nine strikeouts while leading the Lakers to a 7-0 win. They scored a single run in each of the first three innings and had four in the 4th inning as well.
