Baseball drops weekend series finale versus #15 UIS

EMERSON, Ga. -- The Cardinal Baseball team faced the #15 University of Illinois-Springfield Prairie Stars on Saturday afternoon at the Lake Point Complex in Emerson, Georgia. SVSU held a third inning lead but couldn't hold-off a late charge from the Stars, dropping the contest by a final score of 12-6.

Saginaw Valley took a 2-1 lead in the home half of the 3rd inning when Andrew Burke scored on a wild pitch and Collin Winters ripped an RBI double to push Jordan Swiss across. 

The Prairie Stars went for one in the top of the 4th and two in the 5th, taking a 4-2 lead over the Cardinals.

In the top of the 7th, UIS went for a big inning with seven runs, pushing their lead to 11-2. 

SVSU responded in the bottom of the 7th and 8th, respectively, to make the score 11-6. Burke had a bases-loaded walk to score Jacob Mansfield and Swiss scored Craig Wilson Jr. on a sacrifice fly. The 8th saw Joshua Riggs post an RBI double to push Winters across and another bases-loaded walk to Derrek Clyde plated Riggs.

Those runs for the Cardinals were scored around a single run in the top of the 8th, which put the score at the 12-6 final score.

Five Cardinals had a single hit in the game, with Winters and Riggs each having a double. Gerrit Eding, Clyde and Swiss added a single. Clyde, Burke, Swiss, Winters and Riggs all had an RBI. Clyde and Burke each walked twice while Swiss had two stolen bases.

Amani Godfrey (0-1) took the loss on the mound, working 4.2 innings and giving up four runs on five hits, four walks and striking-out four.
