Cardinals Compete in the Stan Lyons Invitational

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Saginaw Valley State University men's and women's track and field teams competed Saturday (4/30) in the Butler University Hosted Stan Lyons Invitational.

The women were led by junior Sarah Kawiecki (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage HS) who placed fifth in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles and seventh in the 100-meter high hurdles clocking in at 1:03.96 and 15.41, respectively.  Teammate Elizabeth Willford (Gladwin, Mich./Gladwin HS) would also earn a top-finish in the 100-meter hurdles coming in with a time of 15.48 placing her ninth overall.  Willford also placed tied for 10th in the pole vault competition with a height of 3.54 meters.  Freshman Diamond Taylor (Southfield, Mich./Southfield HS) earned a seventh place in the 400-meter dash crossing the line with a final time of 58.16.  Teammates Samantha Cormier (Frankenmuth, Mich./Frankenmuth HS) and Kayleigh Nelson (Standish, Mich./Standish-Sterling HS) both earned top-finishes in the throwing events, Cormier in the javelin throw with a distance of 36.43 meters and Nelson in the hammer throw with a distance of 47.61 meters.  Rounding out the meet for the Cardinals was freshman Lauren Little (Oak Park, Mich./Berkley HS) who placed tenth in the triple jump competition with a distance of 10.59 meters.

The men were led by junior Jon Wetters (Essexville, Mich./Garber HS) who placed second overall in the steeple chase competition clocking in at 9:29.60.  The 4x100-meter relay team consisting of Eric Osley (St. Clair Shores, Mich./South Lake HS), Raetron Bryant (Burton, Mich./Artherton HS), Lee Chiatalas (Fenton, Mich./Linden HS), and James Walker (West Bloomfield, Mich./Walled Lake Central HS) earned a third place finish crossing the line with a final time of 42.12.  Bryant would also earn a tenth place finish in the triple jump competition with a distance of 12.57 meters.  Placing tied for fourth in the high jump was freshman Frank Sanders (Detroit, Mich./Sterling Heights HS) who leaped a height of 2.00 meters.     

The Cardinals will be back in action again next week (5/4 - 5/6) when they compete in the Northwood University hosted Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championships.
