SVSU Cross Country Competes in NCAA DII National Championships

The Saginaw Valley State University women's cross country team earned a 19th place finish at the NCAA DII Cross Country National Championships. The Cardinal men had two athletes, CarLee Stimpfel and Dayton Brown, compete as well and garnered All-American honors for finishing in the top-40.

Women's Results: The women entered the race ranked 25th and finished 19th overall scoring 519 points as a team and had a team average time of 21:56.0 for the 6k race. The Cardinals were just two points out of 18th place and 12 points out of 17th place for the 6k race.

  • Sophomore Katelyn Spooner led the Cardinals finishing first for the team crossing the line at a collegiate best of 21:28.3, good for 76th place overall passing multiple athletes in the final stretch of the race.
  • Next up was Morgan Fuerst who earned a 105th place finish for SVSU and came in at 21:43.3.
  • Finishing in 114th place was senior Sydney Kreger who earned a lifetime best coming in with a final time of 21:49.1.
  • Right behind Kreger was junior Jenna Keiser who crossed the line at 21:52.8, good for 119th place
  • Rounding out the Cardinals top-five was Arianna Wegienka who finished 199th with a season best of 22:46.2.

Men's Results: The men were led by CarLee Stimpfel who finished 22nd overall and was closely followed by Dayton Brown who placed 32nd overall. These top-40 finishes earned the Cardinal athletes All-American honors, Stimpfel's second of his career and Brown's first.

  • Sophomore CarLee Stimpfel finished 22nd overall with a final time of 30:19.0 for the 10k race.
  • Following Stimpfel was sophomore Dayton Brown coming in with a time of 30:34.8 which was good for a 32nd place finish.

The Cardinals will transition from cross country to indoor track and field and will compete at home Friday (Dec. 6) as they kickoff day one of the SVSU Holiday Open. The women's pentathlon will start at 12 p.m. with the men's heptathlon to follow at 12:15 p.m. More information can be found at svsucardinals.com.
