Cardinal Runners Compete at MSU Spartan Invitational

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University men's and women's cross country teams ran their second race of the season at the Spartan Invitational on Friday (Sept. 14) at Michigan State's Forest Akers Golf Course.

The Lady Cardinals would be paced by sophomore Emily Short (Tawas, Mich. / Tawas Area HS) who placed 58th overall in a time of 22:43.  Senior Lauren Hill (Flat Rock, Mich. / Flat Rock HS) was the second Cardinal to finish the course (86th overall) in a time 23:03.  

Tori Peet (Lapeer, Mich. / Lapeer West HS) finished 117th overall with a time of 23:35, while junior Amanda Paris (Hemlock, Mich. / Hemlock HS) also finished in the top 150, crossing the line in 147th with a time of 24:10.

Teha Ames (Shepherd, Mich. / Shepherd HS) would cross the line in 24:19 for the Cardinals, while teammates Rachel Cahill (Niagara Falls, Ontario / A.N. Myer High School) and Chantelle Fondren (Niagara Falls, Ontario / A.N. Myer High School), would finish with times of 24:32 and 24:40, respectively.

Freshmen Kelly Batzloff (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Utica Ford II HS), Jessica Reeves and senior Stephanie McMall (Bay City, Mich. / Bay City Western HS) would round out the Cardinals competitors, placing 186th, 196th and 216th, in a field of 309 runners.

On the men's side, senior Joseph Burelle (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Stevenson HS) paced the Cardinals for the second straight meet, placing 81st overall with a time of 26:17.

Junior Gareth Gose (Leslie, Mich. / Leslie HS) and senior Tyler Noble (Shepherd, Mich.) crossed the line just a second apart, taking the 106th and 107th, respectively. Gose finished in 26:38, while Noble completed the course in 26:39.

Junior Chad Scott was the next SVSU harrier across the line in a time of 26:51, good enough for 123rd place.  Sophomore Tony Peel (Swartz Creek, Mich. / Swartz Creek HS) and senior Eric Spitz (Holt, Mich. / Holt HS) finished just eight seconds apart, placing 128th and 138th, respectively.  Peel finished in 26:57, while Spitz clocked in at 27:05.

Kyle Henderson (Freeland, Mich. / Freeland HS) and Brandon Bishop (Burt, Mich. / Chesaning HS) rounded out Saginaw Valley's competitors, placing 161st and 208th, respectively, in a field of 317 runners.

The Cardinals will be back in action at the Lansing Community College Invitational on Friday, Sept. 28.
