Slow Start Dooms Cardinals at Wisconsin-Parkside

KENOSHA, Wis.--The Saginaw Valley State University volleyball team was unable to get on track offensively at Wisconsin-Parkside where the Cardinals were defeated 25-17, 18-25, 25-15, 25-11 by the host Rangers on Friday evening at De Simone Arena. 

The Cardinals fall to 10-13 on the season, including a 5-7 mark in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Parkside improves to 8-14 overall and 2-9 in the GLIAC.

How it Happened:

  • Parkside outhit SVSU .219 to .061 to grab the first set.
  • The Cardinals tied the match after taking the second set by seven points. They hit .256 and held the Rangers to a .179 attack percentage. SVSU rushed out to a 13-3 advantage and never looked back.
  • The visitors enjoyed another solid start in the third, going up 6-3. But Parkside reeled off six consecutive points to take a 9-6 advantage, never trailing after that.
  • In the fourth, Parkside finished off the match by hitting .364 compared to minus-.136 for Saginaw Valley.
  • Overall, the Rangers hit .221 and SVSU, .115. The Cardinals struggled with six ball-handling errors and 10 reception miscues.
  • Reese Rossnagel struck for a match-high 17 kills for Parkside, who also got 17 digs from Cayla Gutche.

Inside the Box Score:

  • Madison Thompson and Rylee Zimmer led the Cardinals with 11 and 10 kills apiece.
  • Teammate Peyton Gerstacker posted 24 assists and a match-best five service aces.
  • SVSU's Kelsey Vittitow made digs.
  • Saginaw Valley took the first meeting earlier this season on Sept. 10 at home, 25-19, 25-19, 25-18.
