SVSU sweeps Parkside in 2022 Home Opener

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich.—Behind an efficient offense and a tenacious defense, the Saginaw Valley State University volleyball team won its fifth match in a row Saturday with a 25-19, 25-19, 25-18 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory over visiting Wisconsin-Parkside at Hamilton Gymnasium.

The host Cardinals upped their record to 6-4 overall and 2-0 in the GLIAC, while the Rangers fell to 5-4 on the season and 0-1 in the conference.

How it Happened:

  • Saginaw Valley hit .294 in the opening set, .258 in the second, and .393 in the final stanza to end up .312 for the match. On defense, the Cardinals held the Rangers to .119 on the afternoon – including a .100 clip in the first set.
  • Madison Thompson and Sarah Veale led the Cardinal offense with 13 and 11 kills, respectively. Thompson hit for a robust .440 attack percentage while Veale recorded a .409 clip.
  • Elizabeth Bruschuk and Thompson both had three service aces apiece to account for SVSU's total for the match, while the defense didn't commit any reception errors.
  • Peyton Gerstacker converted 34 assists for SVSU.
  • On defense, SVSU was led by Kelsey Vittitow (13 digs) and Patricia Pratt (4 blocks).
  • The Cardinals recorded seven team blocks while Parkside had two. SVSU also kept more balls in play with 42 digs to 37 for the Rangers.

Inside the Box Score:

  • SVSU's winning streak is its longest since starting last fall 8-0.
  • The Cardinals are also 2-0 in the conference for the first time since 2011.
  • The .312 hitting percentage by SVSU is a single-match high this season, and the Cardinals' 12 attack errors are also their fewest.
