SVSU falls in three sets on Senior Day

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University volleyball team hosted the second of two games in two days in the regular-season home finale against No. 22 (T) Michigan Tech Saturday at the James E. O'Neill Jr. Arena.

The Cardinals led 16-14 in the first set before the Huskies went on an 11-1 run to go up 1-0. The teams battled in the second, but Michigan Tech held on for a 25-20 win and went on to cruise through the third 25-11 to sweep the match.

The loss drops SVSU to 2-8 overall and in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

In a pregame ceremony, the Cardinals honored Emily Friesl on Senior Day. She is a two-time All-GLIAC First Team honoree and was named the 2019 GLIAC Blocker of the Year. Entering the match on Saturday, Emily totaled 758 kills, 52 service aces, and 332 total blocks, including 44 solo, in 91 matches and 329 sets played in her career.

Against the Huskies, Maria Vukaj led the offense with 11 kills. Haley Clum and Madison Thompson each finished with four kills. Peyton Gerstacker finished with 15 assists, while Kelsey Vittitow recorded a team-high six digs. The Cardinals finished with nine total blocks, including three from Rylee Zimmer.

Anna Jonynas led the Huskies with 11 kills, while Laura De Marchi recorded 32 assists.

The Cardinals close the regular season with two straight weekends on the road, starting at Ashland University at 7 pm Friday in Ashland, Ohio.
