The Saginaw Valley State Volleyball team completed their 2017 season campaign with a 3-0 victory over the Lakers of Lake Superior State on Saturday (Nov. 11) afternoon. SVSU headed to 6-21 overall record and 4-12 in the GLIAC and Lake State ended with a 1-15 conference record and 3-22 overall.

Before the match begin, the Cardinals honored two graduating seniors of the 2017 class. Senior libero Emily Nieman and attacker McKenzie Schuster were recognized for their impeccable contribution over their time spent at Saginaw Valley.

Set one was a battle back and fourth between the two teams with SVSU and LSSU both earning 12 kills. The Cardinals sneaked in one extra dig over the Lakers with 17 and added in a solo ace to take the victory 26-24.

The Cardinals heated up in the second set, posting a .367 hitting percentage, holding the Lakers to a .162. Schuster posted five kills and two block assists to head to a 25-17 victory. SVSU edged out a 2-0 lead over Lake Superior State going into set three.

The final set was similar to set one, with the Lakers struggling to keep a lead once earned.With multiple changes of leads, it was Schuster's six kills and outside Sarah Tabit added four kills, to take the Cardinals to a set three victory, 26-24 and the match, 3-0.

• Senior McKenzie Schuster executed her senior day in style, contributing the team high of 14 kills, hitting a .303. She also tallied in five block assists, earning herself the "Player of the Match."
Hannah Tabit recorded 31 assists in tonight's victory over the Lakers.
Abbie Toland lead the team with 14 digs.
Lindsey Jacobs contributed 12 digs and two assists.
Emily Friesl held down the net with nine block assists and one solo block.
• SVSU posted a .220 hitting percentage on the day, holding the Lakers to a .183.
• The Cardinals grabbed 21 Block assists and one solo block.

"We did a great job finishing off set one and that made the difference in the match as a whole. That win allowed us to become more aggressive in the rest of the game. Our offense was solid today and our blocking really came through in crucial plays. It was a great way to send off the senior class and the 2017 season."

Up Next...

The Cardinals have finished their 2017 season with the win over the Lakers and will not be heading to the GLIAC tournament that begins next week. SVSU will take some time to enjoy today's senior day celebrations and will get back to work training for the 2018-19 season.
