Volleyball Grabs Record 10th Straight Victory at LSSU

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - Saginaw Valley State University traveled north for an early week GLIAC North Division matchup at Lake Superior State University on Tuesday afternoon. The Cardinals started strong and were dominant throughout, cruising to a 3-0 sweep over the Lakers in a match that lasted just over an hour.

The Cardinals opened up play in the opening set by taking an 8-0 lead and would lead 16-4 after a service ace over Lake Superior. Despite the Lakers drawing to within seven at 18-11, SV closed-out for the 25-14 win and 1-0 lead in the match.

The second set saw much of the same, with the Cards leading 8-1 to begin things and never letting the home team get to within seven after leading by a 13-6 margin. Saginaw Valley would finish with three straight points to grab a 2-0 overall advantage after claiming the set 25-10.

The third frame saw the Cards post their highest hitting percentage of the contest, registering a mark of .294 with 12 kills and just a pair of errors on 34 swings. The set was tight up until 9-8 in SVSU's favor, then the visitors went on an 8-0 run and got 13 of the next 15 to make the count 22-10. It would finish with a 25-16 count, sealing the deal for SV with the 3-0 victory.

Inside the Boxscore

  • Kaylee Schmitt posted a .579 hitting percentage, notching a match-best 11 kills. She added a match-high four blocks as well and was named Chili's Player of the Match. 
  • McKenzie Schuster added five kills, swinging at a .300 clip in the three set sweep.
  • Emily Nieman had a team-high 13 digs.
  • Abbie Toland added seven digs to the defensive effort.
  • Kelly Vellucci had 21 assists with three kills for the Cardinals.
  • SVSU hit .253 overall in the match while holding the Lakers to a mark of .009.
  • The Cardinals also had six service aces compared to none for LSSU.
  • The 10 straight victories gives the team a new program record, besting the previous mark of nine.

"We passed and blocked well in the match, and that kept Lake Superior State from getting much momentum. Even though we didn't get many blocks for kills, we turned back a lot of their attacks and forced them to commit some errors."

The Cardinals return to SV's Hamilton Gymnasium for their final two home regular season contests this upcoming weekend. Saginaw Valley hosts Grand Valley State on Friday (Nov. 4) at 7:00 p.m. before hosting Ferris State on Saturday in a 1:00 p.m. matchup.
