PAINESVILLE, Ohio - The SVSU volleyball team continued on the road in Ohio on Saturday (Oct. 8) afternoon, taking-on the Lake Erie Storm in a GLIAC battle. 

The Storm used a 25-16 edge in the opening set to grab a 1-0 lead in the match but the Cardinals quickly responded to knot the score at 1-1. SVSU posted a 25-20 win in the second to make that happen. 

Lake Erie then crept back in the lead after claiming a narrow 25-23 victory in the third frame for the 2-1 lead, but the Cardinals would be resilient once again, fighting and tying the match once more with a 28-26 advantage in the fourth set to make the score 2-2 and force a fifth set. 

The fifth and final set was similar to the two previous ones, as it was close throughout until Saginaw Valley put a stamp on its third straight five-set victory with a 15-12 win to claim the 3-2 decision.

Inside the Boxscore

• The Cardinals had their best hitting percentage in the final set, posting a .306 mark with 13 kills on 36 swings.
• Kaylee Schmitt posted a .306 hitting percentage as well in the match, as she notched 18 kills with three blocks, three service aces and five digs. The 18 kills matched her career-high.
• Kennedy Marker added 10 kills, hitting .296 with three digs.
• Kelly Vellucci racked-up a career-best 61 assists in the contest, setting her teammates up with 71 total kills. She added 15 digs to help our defensively. She was named the Chili's Player of the Match for her efforts. 
• Emily Nieman posted a match-high 28 digs while Abbie Toland had 24 for the most in her young career in an SVSU uniform.
• Tamara Heller had another stellar match, recording 15 kills and 24 digs for the Cards. 
• Andrea Brigham chipped-in with 15 kills and 12 digs for Saginaw Valley.

"Lake Erie did a very good job attacking and we took awhile to make the blocking adjustments that were needed. But once we caught up with their offense and then got our own defense working harder we were able to make a battle of it. Our offense was much more diverse this weekend and that made for an exciting couple of matches."

Up Next...

The Cards play next in the 2016 GLIAC / GLVC Crossover Tournament, which will take place on Friday and Saturday in Aurora, Illinois. Opponents and times are yet to be determined and should come out on Monday.
