COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Cardinal volleyball team began its weekend of road matches in Ohio on Friday (Oct. 7) evening with a contest at Ohio Dominican University. After taking a 2-0 lead in the contest, SVSU overcame a Panther comeback and pulled-out a five-set win against the GLIAC South opponent.

Saginaw Valley opened play with a 25-19 decision in the opening frame and would push the lead out to 2-0 after finishing with a 25-21 edge in the second.

ODU rallied back to tie things up with 25-20 and 26-24 victories in the third and fourth sets, respectively.

The Cards would hold strong in the fifth, fighting through a back-and-forth affair to pull-out the 3-2 victory after a 15-13 edge in the final frame.

• Tamara Heller was named the Chili's Player of the Match for SVSU, as she posted a career-high 21 kills and added 20 digs for the Cards. She hit .327 in the contest. 
• Emily Nieman posted a new career-best with her 35 digs against the Panthers.
• Kennedy Marker (11) and McKenzie Schuster (10) reached double-figures in kills as well, with Schuster adding four blocks and Marker notching a match-high five.
• Andrea Brigham posted nine kills and 15 digs while Kelly Vellucci added 46 assists and 13 digs.

"ODU came out serving tough and attacking well early. We made some very good adjustments early and came back to win set one after being down and really played steady and aggressive in the second set as wel. But our passing got rough in sets three and four and we missed a chance at finishing set four to win the match. We battled in the fifth set but couldn't get the lead until late, when our blocking finally came around and we made some crucial stops. It was a good team effort with some great individual efforts and a nice contribution from the bench."

Saginaw Valley continues play in Ohio, as the Cardinals take-on the Lake Erie Storm in a 2:00 p.m. matchup in Painesville. The Storm is coming off a 3-0 victory over Lake Superior State on Friday.
