Volleyball Claims 3-1 Home Victory Over Northern Michigan

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – Coming off a tough 3-1 Friday night loss at the hands of Michigan Tech, the Saginaw Valley State University volleyball team rebounded in a big way, posting a key 3-1 victory over the visiting Northern Michigan University Wildcats in GLIAC North Division play.

Northern Michigan got out to a 1-0 lead after posting a 25-19 victory over the Cardinals in the opening set.

SVSU responded with a big offensive second set, using a .375 hitting percentage to knot the match at 1-1 with a 25-18 win.

The Cardinals would pull out a back and forth third set to take a 2-1 lead. Trailing 24-20, SVSU rattled-off six straight points to claim the 26-24 win.

Saginaw Valley would close things out in the fourth frame, pulling out a 25-22 win to seal the 3-1 victory. 

Inside the Boxscore

  • Kaylee Schmitt posted a match-high 15 kills while hitting .367, adding five blocks on the defensive end.
  • Morgan Eddy reached double digit figures in kills as well, racking-up 10 while blocking three Wildcat attack attempts.
  • Brooke Tiller posted a team-high 16 digs while Tamara Heller (15), Emily Nieman (14) and Kelly Vellucci (12) all recorded double digits in digs as well.
  • Vellucci added 36 assists in the match for Saginaw Valley.
  • Maggie Liebeck led NMU with 14 kills while Alex Berger had a match-best 25 digs and Jami Hogeboom posted 44 assists.

Chili's "Player of the Match" 

Schmitt earned Chili's "Player of the Match" honors for the second consecutive time after her 15 kills and five blocks.

The Cardinals continue play at home this upcoming weekend, as they host Grand Valley State University on Friday at 7:00 p.m. before hosting Ferris State University Saturday in a 2:00 p.m. matchup.
