Volleyball Splits Day One at Midwest Region Crossover

AURORA, Ill. – The SVSU volleyball team traveled to the suburbs of Chicago to take part in the 2015 Midwest Region Crossover Tournament, held at the Great Lakes Center in Aurora, Illinois. The Cardinals were slated to play Drury University and McKendree University on day one of competition. SVSU opened the day with a narrow 3-2 victory over the Panthers before dropping a 3-1 decision to the Bearcats in the second game. 

The Panthers jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a 25-19 win in the first set. SVSU responded with a close 25-22 win in the second frame to knot the score at 1-1. The teams would alternate the next two sets, with Drury posting a 25-23 advantage in the third set to jump ahead before the Cardinals tied the match up again with a 25-20 victory in the fourth set. That set the stage for the fifth and final set, where SVSU closed the match out with a 15-11 win to seal the 3-2 victory.

Saginaw Valley grabbed the lead in the second match of the game, claiming a 25-22 win over McKendree in the opening set to take the 1-0 advantage. McKendree bounced back and claimed the next three sets, winning with scores of 25-19, 26-24 and 25-19, respectively.

Inside the Boxscore - Drury

  • Andrea Brigham had a team-high 16 kills and added 13 digs for the Cardinals.
  • Kelly Vellucci had 47 assists while adding eight kills for a .438 hitting percentage. She added 20 digs in the contest as well.
  • Morgan Eddy added nine kills, as did Tamara Heller. Heller was one of four Cardinals who had at least 20 digs for SVSU. Eddy had a team-best five blocks for SVSU as well.
  • Brooke Tiller (26), Vellucci (20), and Emily Nieman (23) were the other SV players with 20 or more kills.
  • McKenzie Schuster had nine kills and four blocks for the Cardinals. 

Chili's "Player of the Match"

Brigham earned the honor with her team-high 16 kills and 13 digs.

Inside the Boxscore - McKendree

  • Heller had seven kills and 15 digs for SV in the second match.
  • Brigham had a team-best 11 kills and added nine digs defensively.
  • Vellucci had 35 assists, seven kills and nine digs.
  • Nieman led the way defensively with a team-high 16 digs.
  • Eddy had a team-high five blocks for the Cardinals.

Chili's "Player of the Match"

Vellucci was named the player of the match after tallying 35 assists, seven kills and nine digs.

Up Next for the SVSU...

The Cardinals continue play Saturday (Oct. 17) at the Crossover Tournament, as SVSU plays Ohio Valley in a 2:00 p.m. contest. Ohio Valley dropped 3-0 contests to Michigan Tech and Ferris State on the first day of the tournament.
