Cardinals Get Back on Track With 3-0 Sweep Over Dragons

TIFFIN, Ohio - The SVSU volleyball team took to the road once more this weekend for another pair of GLIAC matches, the first being a 7:00 p.m. showdown with the Tiffin University Dragons on Friday night. After a pair of losses to nationally-ranked foes last weekend, the Cardinals bounced back Friday with a 3-0 victory over Tiffin.

The win improved SVSU's overall record to 9-2 overall and 1-2 in the GLIAC while Tiffin falls to 5-4 overall and 2-1 in league play.

The Cardinals came out of the gate and scored a 25-20 win in the opening set to grab the 1-0 lead. SV then extended that out to 2-0 after a convincing 25-15 showing in the second frame. Saginaw Valley would continue on and grab victory in a very close third set, 25-23, to close out for the victory.

"We brought a good combination of blocking and defense and our serve receive made our offense fast as well," stated head coach Will Stanton. "We were then able to control the ball on our side of the net fairly well. They had some really good offense and we had to make some adjustments early but we were able to catch up with their speed and slow them down just enough."

Kennedy Marker led the charge for the visitors, as she posted a career-high 10 kills and hit for a .438 percentage in the match. She added a pair of blocks while being named the Chili's "Player of the Match" for her efforts. Kaylee Schmitt had nine kills while hitting at a .381 clip, adding a match-high four blocks as well.

Brooke Tiller had a team-best 14 digs to anchor the defense while teammates Andrea Brigham (12), Tamara Heller (12) and Emily Nieman (11) all reached double digits in the digs department as well.

Kelly Vellucci had 42 assists in the match for SVSU.

Saginaw Valley takes its 9-2 record to Columbus Saturday in a 5:00 p.m. matchup with the Ohio Dominican Panthers.
