Volleyball Falls in GLIAC Tournament Semifinal Contest at GVSU

ALLENDALE - The Saginaw Valley State University volleyball team, competing in the 2014 GLIAC Tournament Semifinals round, fell on the road at the tourney's top seed and host Grand Valley State University.  The 5th-seeded Cardinals, coming off a 3-0 quarterfinals victory over Northern Michigan on Wednesday, fell to the Lakers by a score of 3-0 on Saturday (11/15).

SVSU was competing in the league tournament's semifinal round for the first time since the 2011 season when the Cardinals posted an 18-11 overall record and had a showing in the NCAA Midwest Regionals.

Grand Valley took a 1-0 advantage in the match after claiming a 25-20 decision in the first set.  The Lakers claimed the second frame by a 25-23 score and closed the match out for the sweep after another 25-20 win in the third and final set.

Senior Kelsey Ferla recorded a match-high 13 kills and eight digs in the contest while fellow senior Makenzie Frodle had 11 kills, adding a match-high five blocks.

Sophomore Kelly Vellucci had 33 assists for the Cards to go along with nine digs.

Senior Kate Czopek and freshman Tamara Heller each had a team-high 12 digs while junior Brooke Tiller had 11 to help anchor the Cardinal defense.

Saginaw Valley posted a 12-6 overall advantage over the Lakers blocking in the contest.

The Cardinals' record falls to 17-11 overall to finish the 2014 season while the Lakers improve to 23-4 overall and advance to the Championship match on Sunday.  SV will lose five seniors to graduation from this year's class.
