Victory Over Michigan Tech Gives SVSU Volleyball Fifth Straight

HOUGHTON - The Saginaw Valley State University volleyball team traveled to the Upper Peninsula for a GLIAC North Division matchup on Halloween against the Michigan Tech University Huskies.  The Cardinals would keep their hot streak rolling, posting a 3-0 victory over the home team for their fifth victory in a row.

The five straight victories have all been sweeps and have improved SVSU's overall record to 15-8 with an 11-4 mark in the GLIAC.  Michigan Tech fell to 9-15 overall and 6-9 in league play after the defeat.

SVSU stormed out to a 1-0 lead in the match, using a .382 hitting percentage in the opening set to post a 25-17 win.  The Cards would close things out in the contest with 25-21 and 25-23 victories in the second and third sets, respectively.

Saginaw Valley held the Huskies to a hitting percentage under .100 in both of the first two sets and to an overall mark of .141 in the game.  SVSU posted a solid .297 percentage in the three sets.

Sophomore Kaylee Schmitt had a match-high 12 kills, hitting .435 and tying for a match-best four blocks.  She was named the Chili's "Player of the Match" for her efforts.

Senior Makenzie Frodle had 11 kills while hitting .391, adding four blocks herself.  Fellow senior Kelsey Ferla had double-digit kills as well, posting 12 while adding 11 digs.

Freshman Tamara Heller had a match-high 18 digs and sophomore setter Kelly Vellucci had 40 assists with 13 digs as well.  Junior Brooke Tiller added 11 digs to the defensive effort.

SVSU had 15 total blocks compared to just six for the Huskies.

"It was a good team win with some great defensive play," said SVSU head coach Will Stanton, whose team currently sits #5 in the overall GLIAC Standings.  "Tech did a great job on defense and we had to step up our all-around play to try and match it."

Saginaw Valley travels down the road to face Northern Michigan University on Saturday (11/1) in a 4:00 pm matchup in Marquette.
