Volleyball Makes it Four Straight With 3-0 Victory Over Wayne State

UNIVERSITY CENTER - The Saginaw Valley State University volleyball team hosted Wayne State University in a Tuesday night Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) matchup and came away with its fourth straight victory after a 3-0 defeat of the Warriors.

The home win pushes SV's record to 14-8 overall on the season and 10-4 in the GLIAC while Wayne State falls to 8-13 and 5-9 in league play.

The Cardinals posted a 25-21 advantage in the first set and would follow that up with a 25-18 victory in the second frame.  SVSU continued and sealed the match with a 25-20 win in the third set and used a solid .304 hitting percentage for the entire match.

The Saginaw Valley defense held the Warriors to a hitting percentage of .152 and posted 15 blocks compared to WSU's 10.

SVSU was led offensively by senior Kelsey Ferla, who registered 19 kills and a .405 hitting percentage, adding seven digs and four blocks.  She was selected as the Chili's "Player of the Match" in her final home regualr season contest in an SVSU uniform.

Sophomore Kaylee Schmitt kept up her stellar offensive production as well, as she had eight kills while hitting at a .533 clip and added a match-high five blocks.

Sophomore setter Kelly Vellucci had 35 assists and four kills on seven attempts while setting her teammates up well for the .304 hitting percentage on the night.  She added a match-best 12 digs, joining junior libero Brooke Tiller with that mark.

Freshman Tamara Heller chipped-in with eight digs for the home squad in the victory.

The win over Wayne State concludes the home schedule for the 2014 slate at SVSU.  The Cardinals travel to the U.P. for matches against Michigan Tech on Friday (5 pm) and Northern Michigan on Saturday (4 pm).  It's the front end of a four game road stretch that includes three of the top four teams in the league.  Saginaw Valley currently sits in the #5 position of the overall standings.
