UNIVERSITY CENTER - Kicking-off its 2014 homecoming weekend with a matchup with the Lake Superior State University Lakers, the Saginaw Valley State University women's volleyball team was impressive in the match with a 3-0 sweep over the visitors.
The Cardinals had the offense rolling in the game, hitting .387 in the opening set to take an early 1-0 lead over the Lakers with a 25-16 win. SVSU stepped-up that number in the second frame, notching a .406 hitting percentage to move the lead out to 2-0 after a 25-13 victory. Saginaw Valley would then close things out with a 25-17 edge in the third and final set, improving its record to 12-8 overall on the season and 8-4 in the GLIAC
Lake Superior State fell to 2-18 overall and 1-11 in league play after the defeat.
Saginaw Valley hit .309 as a team in the contest and held LSSU to a .021 mark. The Cardinals out-blocked the Lakers as well by a 13-8 count.
The Cards were led by many offensive weapons in the match, with freshman McKenzie Schuster leading the way with a career-best eight kills on just 11 swings, posting a .636 percentage while adding a match and career-high six blocks. Schuster was named the Chili's "Player of the Match" for her stellar performance.
Senior Makenzie Frodle hit a clean .700 percentage with seven kills on 10 attempts, registering zero attack errors. She added four blocks for the Cards.
Sophomore Kaylee Schmitt was solid offensively as well, registering a match-high 11 kills and hitting at a .474 clip. She added two blocks.
Senior Kelsey Ferla added 11 kills to the offensive attack as well, hitting .333.
Junior Brooke Tiller posted a team-high nine digs while sophomore Kelly Vellucci had 26 assists and freshman Monica Skrabut added 10 helpers for SVSU.
Saginaw Valley returns to the court Saturday (10/25) for a homecoming match against rival Northwood University. The GLIAC North Division matchup is set to begin at 2:00 pm at SVSU's Cardinal Gym. It will be Senior Day for SVSU, as the program will honor the five seniors for the Class of 2014.
