Volleyball Takes Early Lead, Falls in Five to Oilers

UNIVERSITY CENTER - The Saginaw Valley State University volleyball team dropped a five-set match to the University of Findlay Oilers on Friday night (10/3).

The loss drops SVSU to 7-6 overall and 4-4 in the GLIAC while the Oilers improve to 10-3 and 7-1 in league play.

The Cardinals began the match in control, taking an early 2-0 lead after 25-20 and 25-15 victories in the first and second sets, respectively.  In the first two games, SVSU posted hitting percentages of .290 and .276 and held Findlay to marks of .156 and -.059.

Findlay would respond and knot the score at 2-2 after posting wins in the third (25-21) and fourth (25-19) sets.  

That would send the match to the fifth and final set, where the Oilers were able to hold-off the Cards and close-out the match with a 15-8 victory.

Sophomore setter Kelly Vellucci recorded 39'assists, adding nine digs and seven kills.

Andrea Brigham added eight kills and hit for a .267 percentage while being named the Chili's "Player of the Match."  Brooke Tiller had a team-high 18 digs for the Cardinals.

Saginaw Valley returns to the Cardinal Gym Saturday (10/4), as it hosts Hillsdale College in a 2:00 pm Breast Cancer Awareness match.
