Cards Make It Three Straight With 3-1 Victory Over Warriors

DETROIT - The Saginaw Valley State University volleyball team traveled to Wayne State University for its first of four road matches to begin the third week of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) competition.

After falling behind 1-0 when the Warriors claimed the opening set by a score of 25-20, the Cardinals finished strong by taking the final three sets by scores of 25-22, 25-23 and 25-23, respectively.

The victory puts the Cards at 6-3 overall on the year and 3-2 in league play.  It's the third-straight win for SVSU.  The loss drops Wayne State to 3-6 for 2014 and 1-4 in league play.

Saginaw Valley hit .217 overall match, including an outstanding second set that featured a .361 team hitting percentage.

"Wayne State was on fire with their serve and offense," said Head Coach Will Stanton.  "We were fortunate enough to finally catch up and start passing better in games three and four.  Our middles did a nice job attacking and breaking-up their block."

One of the middles, senior Makenzie Frodle, matched a career-high with 18 kills in the match, as she hit for a .571 percentage.  She had five of SVSU's 16 blocks and was named the Chili's "Player of the Match."

Sophomore Morgan Eddy added eight kills with a .500 hitting percentage from the middle position as well.  Redshirt freshman Sidney Scott and sophomore Andrea Brigham added 11 and seven kills, respectively.

Junior Brooke Tiller had a match-best 20 digs while sophomore setter Kelly Vellucci posted a career-high 48 helpers in the contest.  Vellucci chipped-in with 10 digs to help anchor the defense.

It was a good start for a Cardinal team with a heavy workload this week, as SVSU will play three more matches, traveling to Ohio to play Walsh on Friday before facing Malone and #6 Wheeling-Jesuit on Saturday.
