Cardinals Drop Home GLIAC Opener to #15 Bulldogs, 3-0

UNIVERSITY CENTER - The Saginaw Valley State University volleyball team returned home from its season-opening trip and hosted its 2014 GLIAC-opener on Friday (9/12) against #15-ranked Ferris State University.

The Bulldogs began the match by taking a quick 1-0 advantage with a 25-15 victory in the opening set.  The second frame would go back and forth a bit and the Cardinals even had a 24-22 lead and a chance to close-out the frame.  Ferris knotted the score at 24-24, however, and would grab a 25-24 lead.  The game would be tied again at 26-26, but FSU would prevail for the 29-27 win in the second.  The Bulldogs would continue the strong play in the third as well, closing-out for the 3-0 sweep after a 25-17 win in the final set.

Sophomore Kelly Vellucci had 24 assists on the night and added six digs defensively.  Junior libero Brooke Tiller was named the Chili's "Player of the Match," as she recorded 13 digs to anchor the defense.  Senior Makenzie Frodle had four blocks and fellow senior Kate Czopek added 10 digs.

SVSU falls to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in the GLIAC after the defeat while Ferris now stands at 3-2 as well, with a 1-0 mark in league play.  The Cardinals host #18 Grand Valley State on Saturday (9/13) in another GLIAC match that begins at 2:00 pm.
