Cardinals Sweep Huskies In Home Finale

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University volleyball team posted a 3-0 home sweep over the Michigan Tech University Huskies in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Division matchup on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 16).

It was Senior Day at the Cardinal Gym against the Huskies, as the team honored the three seniors who participated in their final home match:  Lyndsay Reynolds, Nicole Adam and Julia Thomas.

The Cardinals got out to a 1-0 lead after claiming the opening set by a score of 25-17, using a .276 team hitting percentage with 12 kills.  SVSU improved on that hitting mark in set number two, posting a .370 percentage while registering 13 kills and extending the lead to 2-0 with a 25-15 win.  Saginaw Valley closed-out the contest with 13 more kills and a .273 hitting percentage, taking the third and final set by a 25-21 count.

SVSU hit .303 as a team for the match and held the Huskies to just a .071 hitting percentage over the three set span.

Reynolds was named the Chili's "Player of the Match", tallying eight kills and three block assists in the final home game of her career.  Reynolds surpassed the 500 kill mark for her career in the contest.

Junior Kelsey Ferla also had eight kills, hitting .467 and adding a match-high 16 digs and two blocks.

Freshman Kaylee Schmitt hit at a .462 clip with six kills and junior Ashley Driscoll added six kills as well while hitting for a .400 percentage.

Freshman Morgan Eddy had six kills and a team-high four blocks.

Adam had 16 assists and five digs and freshman Kelly Vellucci added 16 helpers as well, adding seven digs.

The Cardinals improve to 17-12 overall with the victory and an even 9-9 in GLIAC play.  The Huskies finish their season with a 10-20 record and 6-12 mark in the league.

SVSU secured the #8 seed for the 2013 GLIAC Volleyball Tournament after the win.  The Cardinals will travel to #1 seed Grand Valley State Wednesday (Nov. 20) for a quarterfinal matchup.  A game time has not yet been determined for the contest.  Stay tuned to svsucardinals.com for updates.
