Volleyball Falls To #24 Ferris State In Five Sets

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University volleyball team fell on the road to the #24 team in the nation, the Ferris State University Bulldogs.  

The Cardinals got out to a quick 1-0 lead in the match after claiming the first game by a score of 25-21.  SVSU led 13-7 in the opening frame before the Bulldogs rattled-off six-straight points to knot the score at 13-13.  The teams would battle until the score was tied at 21-21.  The Cards rattled-off four consecutive points to close out the set for the victory.

Ferris rebounded for a 25-14 win in set number two to even the match at 1-1 and pushed the lead to 2-1 after a 28-26 victory in the third set.

With the match on the line, the Cards pulled-out a 25-22 win in the fourth game, tying the contest at 2-2.  SVSU trailed by as many as five when the score was 12-17 in the Bulldogs' favor and fought back to tie the score at 20-20.  Saginaw took five of the next seven points and closed-out for the three point victory.

Saginaw Valley grabbed a lead in the third set when the score was 5-4 and led up until the 14-13 mark.  Ferris took the next three points, however, and closed-out for the 16-14 victory in the set and 3-2 match win.

Junior Kelsey Ferla was named the Chili's "Player of the Match" after posting team-highs in kills (14) and digs (22).  

Senior Lyndsay Reynolds and junior Ashley Driscoll both reached double-digits in kills, with Reynolds hitting for a .325 percentage and adding five block assists.

Freshman setter Kelly Vellucci had 19 assists and seven digs and senior setter Nicole Adam had a double-double, recording 16 assists and 12 digs.

Sophomore libero had 18 digs while junior Kate Czopek added 12.

With the loss, SVSU falls to 16-11 overall on the season and an even 8-8 in GLIAC play.  The Bulldogs improve to 20-7 overall and 13-3 in league play with the victory.

The Cardinals return home on Friday (Nov. 15) for a matchup with Northern Michigan University at 7:00 pm.
