SVSU Falls To Timberwolves, 3-1

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University volleyball team suffered a 3-1 home loss at the hands of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) rival Northwood University on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 2).  

Northwood got out to a 1-0 lead after a back-and-forth opening set ended 26-24 in its favor.

The Cardinals answered right back, knotting the match at 1-1 with a 25-23 victory in the second set. 

The Timberwolves claimed the third frame by a count of 25-23 and closed-out for the 3-1 victory after a 25-16 advantage in the final game.

The loss drops SVSU to 15-9 overall on the season and 7-6 in the GLIAC.  Northwood improves to 17-7 in 2013 with a 10-3 mark in league contests.

Sophomore libero Brooke Tiller led the Cardinals in the match.  Tiller earned Chili's "Player of the Match" plaudits after posting a match-high 29 digs.  

Kaylee Schmitt, a freshman middle hitter, had eight kills and a .444 hitting percentage to go along with five blocks.

Junior middle hitter Ashley Driscoll had a team-high 12 kills while fellow junior Makenzie Frodle had a team-high seven total blocks.

Freshman setter Kelly Vellucci posted 18 assists and 18 digs for the Cardinals.

Saginaw Valley returns to action Tuesday (Nov. 5), as it hosts Lake Superior State University in another GLIAC matchup.  Match time is set for 7:00 pm in the Cardinal Gym.
