UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Cardinal volleyball team welcomed the Ohio Dominican Panthers to the Cardinal Gym for a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match to open-up the 2013 Homecoming Weekend for Saginaw Valley State University. The Cardinals started the weekend in style, posting a 3-0 sweep over the Panthers.
The Cardinals jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead after claiming the first game by a score of 25-17. They extended the lead to 2-0 after a 25-21 victory in the second frame. Saginaw Valley would continue the stellar play and close-out for the sweep, winning set #3 with a 25-20 score.
Saginaw Valley was led offensively by Kate Czopek, who posted a .583 hitting percentage with eight kills on 12 total attempts. She added four digs and a block while garnering Chili's "Player of the Match" plaudits.
Kelsey Ferla had a match-high 11 kills while hitting .320 and added 11 digs defensively.
Kaylee Schmitt also had a solid night offensively, hitting .353 with eight kills.
Brooke Tiller had a match-high 24 digs for the Cardinals, who had 55 digs as a squad.
Kelly Vellucci and Nicole Adam spread the ball around well for SVSU, accounting for 23 and 16 assists, respectively.
The Cardinals hit .248 as a team and held the Panthers to a .083 hitting percentage. SVSU added six service aces on the night.
With the victory, the Cardinals move to 9-7 overall and 4-4 in the GLIAC. The Panthers fall to 7-10 overall and 2-6 in league play.
Saginaw Valley hosts another Ohio school to campus for tomorrow's match. It squares-off with the Tiffin University Dragons for a Homecoming match that is set to begin at 2:00 pm.
