Cardinals Win Opening Set, Eventually Fall At Ashland 3-1

ASHLAND, Ohio - Saginaw Valley State's volleyball team ended its two-day road trip through Ohio with a 3-1 loss at Ashland University.  The loss drops SVSU to 8-7 overall in 2013 and 3-4 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC).  Ashland improves to 12-3 overall and 6-1 in the GLIAC.

The Cardinals got out to a 1-0 lead in the match, as they claimed the first set by a score of 27-25.  Ashland would rebound, winning the next three sets by scores of 25-16, 26-24 and 25-16, respectively.

Junior hitter Kelsey Ferla (Lincoln Park, Mich./Gabriel Richard) posted a team-high 17 kills in the match for SVSU.  She garnered Chili's "Player of the Match" plaudits for her performance.  She added eight digs and a pair of blocks on the defensive end.

Sophomore libero Brooke Tiller (Maumee, Ohio) had a game-high 24 digs for SVSU.

Senior Nicole Adam (Sterling Heights, Mich.) and redshirt freshman Kelly Vellucci (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson) had 18 and 17 assists for the Cardinals, respectively.

Junior Ashley Driscoll (Bellevue, Mich./Pennfield) and freshman Kaylee Schmitt (DeWitt, Mich.) had four blocks each, combining for eight of the 12 total SVSU blocks.

Saginaw Valley is back in action Friday (Oct. 11), as it welcomes Ohio Dominican University for a 7:00 pm match before hosting Tiffin University on Saturday at 2:00 pm for homecoming.
