SVSU Volleyball Notches First Win, Splits On Final Day At Bulldog Invitational

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University volleyball team split on its second and final day at the Ferris State University Bulldog Invitational.  The Cardinals dropped a 3-1 decision to Cedarville (Ohio) before closing-out their tournament with a 3-0 decision over Indiana (Pa.).

In the first match, the Yellowjackets opened a 2-0 lead over SVSU, taking the first two sets by scores of 25-15 and 25-22, respectively.  

Saginaw Valley cut the deficit in half, claiming the third set by a 25-20 mark.

Cedarville would close-out the contest, however, sealing the 3-1 victory after another 25-22 score in the fourth frame.

Junior Makenzie Frodle (Fraser, Mich./Fraser HS) hit at a .333 clip for SVSU in the match, registering 10 kills while adding three blocks on the defensive end.  Senior Lyndsay Reynolds (Saline, Mich./Saline HS) added seven kills and six blocks while junior Kelsey Ferla (Lincoln Park, Mich./Gabriel Richard HS) added seven kills as well.

Senior Nicole Adam (Sterling Heights, Mich./Sterling Heights HS) had 15 assists and red-shirt freshman Kelly Vellucci (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) added 14 helpers, as the two shared setting duties.

SVSU came out swinging in the second match, claiming the first set by a 25-15 mark.  The Cardinals would close-out the match by taking the next two as well by scores of 25-22 and 25-16, respectively.

Ferla had a big second match, posting a match-high 12 kills and hitting .375.  Frodle and Reynolds both added six kills.  Freshman Andrea Brigham (Concord, Mich./Concord HS) had a career-high seven kills, hitting .294 for the contest while adding four blocks.  Freshman Kaylee Schmitt (DeWitt, Mich./DeWitt HS) added a match and career-high five blocks.

Adam had a match-high 17 assists against the Crimson Hawks, who fell to 0-4 after the defeat.

The Cardinals (1-3) travel next weekend to the Game Time Sports Center in Urbana, Ohio to participate in the Urbana Invitational.  Their first match is set for Friday (Sept. 13) against St. Joseph's College (Ind.) at 3:00 pm.
