Breault Named to All-GLIAC Second Team; Mattson Honorable Mention

BAY CITY, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University volleyball team was represented by two student-athletes on the All-GLIAC awards list. Senior setter Sam Breault (Bad Axe, Mich. / Bad Axe HS) garnered All-GLIAC Second Team honors, while senior Laurel Mattson (Lake Odessa, Mich. / Lakewood HS) earned Honorable Mention recognition. Breault and Mattson co-captained the Lady Cardinals during the 2012 season.

Breault led the Cardinals this season with 947 assists in her third season as the primary setter for Saginaw Valley. The senior also tallied 245 digs and 91 kills, including 41 blocks as she played in all but one match this season. Breault finished her career with 2,827 assists and in fifth place all-time in SVSU Volleyball history.

Mattson excelled in her final season at SVSU as she posted a career-high 304 digs in her libero and defensive specialist roles over 29 matches. Mattson, the emotional leader on the floor for the Lady Cardinals, finished her career with 696 digs in 103 career matches over four seasons.

Northwood University sophomore outside hitter Juliia Pakhomenko was named the 2012 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Volleyball "Player of the Year" in voting conducted by the league's head coaches. Grand Valley State University outside hitter Betsy Ronda was tabbed  "Freshman of the Year" while Ferris State University junior Brandie Merren earned "Libero of the Year" honors.  Northwood's Tim Koth was named "Coach of the Year" by his peers.
